Federal Summit 2010, May 18-19 in Washington, D.C., saw record attendance: At USGBC’s 2010 Federal Summit, more than 750 professionals from the green building industry who joined us for two days of education, networking and critical discussions on greening federal, state and local governments. These attendees, including public-sector employees at the local, state and federal level as well as private-sector employees from throughout the industry, engaged in conversations and made connections that will shape green building in the government sector in the year to come.

Green Building and the Government

Use this information to spread the word among your colleagues and elected officials about the importance of greening the public-sector building stock:

  • Much of the $787 billion in federal stimulus money supports green retrofits of publicly owned buildings at the local, state and federal levels.
  • The federal government alone owns and operates some 500,000 buildings.
  • The federal government has a 28 percent greenhouse gas reduction target for federal operations by 2020.
  • 30 percent of all LEED projects are government-owned.

Federal Green Building Leadership Award

At Federal Summit 2010, the U.S. Green Building Council presented the 2010 Federal Green Building Leadership Award to Bob Thompson of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Mr. Thompson leads EPA’s Indoor Environments Branch, the agency’s primary research and development group focused on green building-related research. In his more than 20 years with EPA, he has chaired EPA’s Green Building Research Plan, developed EPA’s Tools for Schools program to provide a healthier and better learning environment in our K-12 schools, chaired the LEED Environmental Quality Technical Advisory Group, and worked on several cross-agency green technical teams. He remains committed to developing and sharing information across government and with external partners to provide building occupants with healthy, high-performance environments that are ready to adapt to the impacts of climate change.
