USGBC, AIA and Architecture for Humanity Partner to Rebuild Sustainable Communities in Haiti

USGBC and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) have announced their support for an Architecture for Humanity Sustainable Design Fellow, who will help play a critical role in rebuilding the infrastructure in Haiti that was demolished in the devastating earthquake. The qualified design professional selected will make a two-year commitment to work directly with community members on the ground in Architecture for Humanity’s Rebuilding Center based in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

2 million meals a day. 1 million simple shelters. These are the staggering numbers that define the immediate work ahead of us in Haiti.

In meeting with President Bill Clinton last week, even as the basic necessities of human life slowly began to flow, we began putting our hands around the rebuilding work before us. The redevelopment work we started before the earthquake takes on new urgency, but it also has begun to take on a practical scope. We’re beginning to envision government buildings that are more to the scale of the community and more widely distributed throughout Haiti; housing that offers basic human comforts and connects to jobs and resources that build in an infrastructure that is sustainable; support services that are embedded in the community not apart from it.

Beyond funds for food and water, simply clearing away the rubble is a huge undertaking that must begin immediately. President Clinton has asked that we put out a call to our community for donations of machinery to help clear a path and building materials that can be used to make the most basic of structures for food distribution, hospitals and sanitary facilities.

If your company or your community has access to materials and machinery that can be put to good use for this effort, please contact Clinton Foundation Director of Foreign Policy Ami Desai at 212-348-0031 (adesai@clintonfoundation.org.) The Clinton Foundation is mobilizing aircraft and seacraft to aggregate and transport these critical items as quickly as possible. With these resources in place, we’ll be able to begin the crucial rebuilding next steps, and we’ll keep you apprised of how you can assist.

Thanks to your support, the Clinton Foundation alone has raised over $6 million in these few short days, but immediate rescue assistance continues to be critical. The Clinton Foundation Haiti Relief Fund has been established to help channel assistance efforts.

USGBC Offers Its Support to "Rescue and Rebuild" efforts in Haiti

USGBC and its members are uniquely positioned to help in the rebuilding of the homes, schools, hospitals and infrastructure demolished in the devastating earthquake in Haiti. USGBC CEO Rick Fedrizzi traveled to Haiti last spring with UN Special Envoy to Haiti President Bill Clinton and a small UN working group, and they have begun developing plans that will jumpstart the rebuilding effort. We’ve also offered to work with our members to develop solutions informed by our work in New Orleans and Greensburg in the wake of the natural disasters that devastated those communities. We will provide ongoing information on our plans and how members of the USGBC family can get involved. One way to provide immediate assistance is through the Clinton Foundation Haiti Relief Fund, which has been established to help channel assistance efforts.
